Fumed Silica (also known as Pyrogenic Silica) is a synthetic, amorphous silicon dioxide with extremely small particle size and large surface area. It is produced by hydrolyzing silicon tetrachloride (SiCl₄) in a high-temperature flame, resulting in highly pure, fluffy white powder.
Core Properties:
- Ultra-fine primary particle size (7–40 nm)
- High surface area (BET: 200–400 m²/g)
- Excellent thickening, anti-settling, and free-flow effects
- Hydrophilic and hydrophobic grades available
Production & Technical Highlights
Production Method: Flame hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride (SiCl₄) at ~1100°C:
SiCl₄ + 2H₂ + O₂ → SiO₂ + 4HCl
Result: Extremely pure silica particles in chain-like aggregate form, offering unmatched control over viscosity and thixotropy.
